Gifted students are found in all ethnic and socioeconomic groups. All gifted students need access to rigorous learning environments to thrive in the classroom. How holistic is your district’s definition of giftedness? Does your district’s mission statement promise inclusive environments that afford rigorous learning to all students? Are there cultural or identification barriers that impede this access? Learn about April Wells’ Gifted Equity Model to ensure students from culturally, linguistically, and economically diverse (CLED) backgrounds have access to gifted identification practices.

This study group will discuss April Wells’ (2020) book, “Achieving Equity in Gifted Programming: Dismantling Barriers and Tapping Potential.” April Wells is the Gifted Coordinator in Illinois School District U-46, where she facilitated the redesign of the District’s gifted program.

Whether you work in the field of gifted education or general education, this book study group is the perfect summer vehicle to discuss shared interests in ensuring historically underserved gifted students reach their potential in the classroom. Make new friends. Gain new perspectives. Strengthen cultural awareness. Learn in an informal environment.
